So, I've needed to update my journal for a while. Sorry about that

The California supreme court held hearings March 5 about California's Proposition 8, stating that "only marriage between a man and a woman will be valid and recognized". Prop 8 passed with about a 55% majority in November.

The supreme court will be ruling on:

a) is prop 8 a "revision" rather than an "amendment" to the state constitution? If it's a "revision", then it requires a 2/3 vote (which it did not get).

b) is prop 8 unconstitutional under separation of powers? Meaning does it remove the ability of the judiciary to protect the interests of minority groups?

c) if prop 8 is ruled to be valid, what is the status of the 18,000 marriages that were legally issued?

They have 90 days from the date of the hearings in which to issue a ruling; so now we're waiting until early June at the latest to find out what's going on.
